This English recipe is a fruit cake with dates, flavoured with orange.

Preparation
Preheat the oven to gas mark 3 (165 °C; 325 °F).
Line and grease a 1 kg loaf tin.
Peel the orange with a potato peeler, and juice the orange. Chop the peel fine (into 2mm squares).
To bake
Roughly chop the dates and put into a large saucepan with the water. Bring to the boil and simmer gently until soft (about five minutes, longer if they are very dry initially).
Remove from the heat and mash to a paste with a wooden spoon or in a food processor.
Mix the flour, dried fruit, baking powder, spice, date paste, orange juice, orange peel, and ground almonds in a large bowl.
Spoon into the tin and sprinkle the top with the sliced almonds.
Bake at gas mark 3 (165 °C; 325 °F) for 90 minutes.
